Comprehensive Orthodontics is the same thing as “full braces”. Typically this type of treatment takes place when a patient has all of their permanent teeth. The right time to start is different for everyone and depends on a number of things: the nature of the orthodontic problems that need to be corrected, a patient’s hygiene and periodontal health, the growth status of a patient, the dental maturity of a patient, coordination with your general dentist for implants or bonding (for those patients where this is indicated), and overall patient health.
Comprehensive treatment may be short in duration – to correct simple crowding, for example – or extensive in nature if there are significant bite or alignment problems to address such as impacted teeth, numerous missing teeth, or severe overbite or underbite cases. The duration of comprehensive treatment is also influenced by how well patients comply with things such as hygiene, elastic wear, keeping appointments, etc.
There is no set age that every patient should begin orthodontic treatment…because every patient is different. Dr. Pollei believes orthodontic treatment that is customized and not cookie-cutter results in superior outcomes. For that reason, many patients may be ready to begin comprehensive treatment following the initial consultation….but for some patients the recommendation may be made to wait to begin treatment for a little bit. Perhaps in order to allow more teeth to erupt or maybe to coordinate treatment with peak adolescent growth. Ultimately, our goal is for indicated comprehensive orthodontic treatment to provide the best treatmemt in the most efficient, beneficial, and cost-effective way possible!
